Most of the Nexus users are already have the updated software of Android 5.0 Lollipop. Other brand like Samsung, Sony, HTC, Nokia, and etc. may start receiving the update next year. While waiting for the Over-The-Air update for Android 5.0 Lollipop in your device, know some general tips and tricks that you need to know.
Wake Up
- You don't have to press for the power button to wake your device, you just need to tap twice on the display and it will wake up.
Search Settings
- Now you can easily search the settings you want to find. Just go to Settings menu, and tap on the magnifying glass, then enter the keyword you want to search.
Selected Apps Only in Homescreen
- Manage apps in your homescreen and select only what you want to see. Go to Play Store > Settings and uncheck the box if you don't want to see it on your homescreen.
Yahoo Mail in Your Gmail
- You can add Yahoo or other mail services to your Gmail. Tap the icon to open the sidebar, scroll down to the bottom and tap Settings > Add account.
Select Drive-Enabled Apps to Wi-Fi Sync
- Limit the drive enabled apps to save a data bill. To do this, go to Google Settings app > Drive-enabled apps and turn on Wi-Fi only. If you need it to sync on a cellular connection, switch it off!
Customize Google Now
- Tap Settings icon in the search bar. You can select the content you want to display, or change settings, or even place a reminder.
Set a Metered Wi-Fi
- You can set your Wi-Fi as metered so that it will give restriction to background data and notify you for large downloads. Go to Settings > Data Usage > Network restriction from the menu.
Turn Off Backgrounds in Calendar
- If you don't have to see the seasonal backdrop in your calendar you can turn it off. Go to Settings > Tap the slider to turn it off.
5.1 Surround Sound
- For better music, Play Movies now support 5.1 soundtracks. To activate go to Settings > Enable Surround Sound. A demo clip is provided for you to test.
Play Flappy Android
- Go to Settings > About phone/tablet > Android version. Then tap the Android version repeatedly until it changes to the Lollipop screen. Once you have the full Lollipop wording visible, press and hold. You'll flip into the Flappy Android game.
Notification Instant Access
- On the lockscreen, just tap the notification twice to open. And if you want to dismiss, just swipe it away.
Pinch to Expand
- If you have a lot of notifications, you can now Pinch to expand it, both on the lockscreen and in the notification area.
Hide Information in Lockscreen Notification
- Select only the information you to display on your notification. Go to Settings > Sound & notification > App notifications, to manage apps with sensitive information.
- Then go to Settings > Sound & notification > When device is locked, to change the information revealed. This will then ensure that all apps you've marked up don't give anything away.
Turn Off Notification
- You do have a choice to turn off or block the notification for any app. Go to Settings > Sound & notification > App notifications.
Silence Notification
- Press the volume button and then tap None, Priority or All. If you select Priority, only your Priority notifications will be served up.
Suspend Notification
- Press the volume button, then select None. Either Indefinitely, or select a time period - ideal to keep your device silent. You can also opt here to only have Priority notifications for a time period, before reverting back to all notifications.
Switch to Vibrate
- Press the volume button, then tap the bell on the pop-up.
Turn On Flashlight
- No need to install an app to turn on your flashlight. Just tap the button in Quick Settings to turn on your flash as a torch.
Display Your Screen on TV
- Do you want to display your device screen on TV? Just swipe down and tap Cast Screen and it will be sent to your Chromecast. Not all apps are supported though.
Casting your Android screen allows you to mirror your Android device to the TV screen.
- To Cast your screen from your Android device:
- Connect your Android device to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast
- Open the Chromecast App
- From the navigation drawer, select 'Cast Screen'
- Touch the 'Cast Screen' button
- Select your Chromecast
To stop Casting your screen:
From your notification drawer:
- Access the notification drop down drawer from your Android device
- Select 'Disconnect' on the notification bar
From your Chromecast app:
- Reopen the Chromecast App
- From the navigation drawer, select 'Cast Screen'
- Select the 'Disconnect' button
Battery Percentage
- Open Quick Settings with a two-finger swipe. Where your battery percentage is displayed.
Time Till Fully Charged
- When connected to a charger, there will be time charge displayed on the screen.

- Swipe down to access Quick Settings, tap the Battery icon. You'll go to the battery status page and see how long you have left and what apps are eating your battery.
Power Saver Mode
- In the battery status page, tap the menu button, select Power Saver to turn on.
Face Unlock
- To activate Face Unlock, go to Settings > Security > Smart Lock. Here you can have the device register your face, so it will unlock when you look at it. This is in additional security to a pattern or password. If it fails to recognize your face, you'll have to enter your password.
Guest Profile
- In the same area (Settings > Users) you can create a Guest profile. While it is setup, you'll get the option to access as a guest from the lock screen.
Limit Other Users Can See
- Create a restricted profile by tapping Settings > Users > Restricted profile. For example, you can then limit what your children can access.
How Much Storage They're Using
- If you want to know how much space is being used up by another profile, head into Settings > Storage. At the bottom of the list it says how much other profile and the guest is using.
