Samsung is finally rejoicing after it
overtook Apple’s iPhone 4S as the world’s best selling smartphone for the first
time ever in this year’s third quarter (July-September) according to latest
statistics released by research firm Strategy Analytics. And only Samsung can
destroy Apple’s winning streak in the smartphone arena.
After exchanging lawsuits, bitter commentary posts and even mockery tv and print ads, Samsung finally grabs the most coveted
crown from Apple. The Samsung Galaxy S3 model shipped 18 million units worldwide
during the third quarter of 2012 alone which tripled the second quarter’s
figure of 5.4 million shipped units. Apple iPhone 4S comes in second place
at 16.2 million shipped units which fell off short from a 19.4 million units
during the second quarter. There was a sudden drop of iPhone 4S sales as
customers decided to wait the release of iPhone 5 before getting a new phone which went on sale on
September 21, that's before the 3rd quarter ends.
The Android-powered smartphone has proven
to be widely popular across North America, Europe and Asia. However, this
victory might be short-lived according to the research firm. Apple iPhone 5 has
a pretty good start as it sold an estimated 6 million units during the third
quarter. It is more likely that Apple will reclaim the crown this fourth
quarter as it comes off strong few days after it hit the shelves. Apple
reportedly sold 5 million units of iPhone 5 on its first weekend and is
expected to skyrocket its sales this holiday season.
The Galaxy S3’s popularity propelled
Samsung with a third quarter profit of $7.4 billion from a 3rd quarter total
revenue of $47.5 billion, all thanks to its Mobile Communications division.
