Social networking giant Facebook just unveiled couple of photos for its Facebook campus expansion designed by famous architect Frank Gehry. Two of Gehry’s projects were the Walt Disney Concert Hall and Google’s Binoculars Building both in LA. And now Facebook tapped Gehry to do their campus expansion which will be on the opposite side of the highway of its existing campus.
The Facebook project is a large building with irregular outer walls and an extensive rooftop garden. On the inside, the said building will be an empty space or few interior walls for everyone to work out in the open, a work arrangement trademark of Facebook. Cafes and a restaurant will also house in the building. And the catchiest feature of this structure is a garden on top of the building which will basically cover the entire roof.

“It will be almost an engineering paradise,” says Facebook spokesman Slater Tow.
Gehry’s single-story, hangar like building which covers 420,000 square feet will most likely amount to a significant cost to a company which has not been doing pretty well in recent stock exchange and is highly scrutinized by its investors. Facebook refuses though to reveal estimated expenses for this project.
Nevertheless, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg seems so thrilled with this expansion. “I’m excited to work with Frank Gehry to design our new campus. The idea is to make perfect engineering space: one giant room that fits thousands of people, all close enough to collaborate together. It will be the largest open floor plan in the world, but it will also have plenty of private, quiet spaces as well. The roof of the building will be a park that blends into the community with a long walking trail, a field and lots of places to sit. From the outside, it will appear as if you’re looking at a hill in nature.”
Oh well, Facebook is just one of those techno companies who spend a lot in creating an attractive workplace to lure in the talented ones. Decoding binaries and all those programming stuff is not a joke. Maybe in this way, techno geniuses can find refuge to a comfortable and relaxing workplace. In Facebook’s case, a rooftop garden of roughly eight combined football fields would be a great breather from heavy work for its employees.
