Hewlett-Packard
(HP) CEO Meg Whitman revealed on Friday that the company is developing a new
smartphone as its bread and butter personal computers and printers are facing
serious challenges.
Whitman said in
an interview with Fox Business Network that, “We have to ultimately offer a
smartphone because in many countries of the world that is your first computing
device. You know, there will be countries around the world where people may
never own a tablet, or a PC, or a desktop. They will do everything on a
smartphone. We’re a computing company. We have to take advantage of that form
factor.”
HP once tried
get into the mobile device market when it purchased Sunnyvale-based Palm in
2010 at $1.2 billion but to no luck it didn’t quite impress the consumers. “We’ve
got to get it right this time,” Whitman said. “My mantra to the team is: better
right than faster.”
One of Whitman’s
moves to keep the company going is sending home thousands of its employees as she
tries to trim down the company. HP announced earlier this month that another
2,000 employees will be laid off from work. Well, that’s not shocking anymore
as its primary business is almost going nowhere but nevertheless HP is still
hoping for a mighty comeback once it launch its own version of smartphone.
